Second Chances

When we first got married, Damion had a lot of bachelor things. A LOT. Honestly his floor lamp and one painting is the only thing that I really liked out of his entire apartment (sorry sweetie). He had a set of coffee tables and matching end tables that were great shapes but a really Orange wood color. I didn't really like them. So six years ago I redid them. I have a picture of it after I was done but it's in the room where princess Newbie is asleep for the night. I might add it in the morning.

It turned out good when I redid it six years ago but I have grown tired of the reddish colored legs and the top always stayed a little sticky and hard to clean. Plus the top was not all wood. Apparently just parts of it were MDF and they buckled over the years. So the top was no longer flat.

Damion wanted to kick it to the curb and just buy a new coffee table but I knew there was a second (or third) life waiting for this one.

My original plan was to take off the top entirely and make a new top to place on it after I had painted the legs a new avocado color and antiqued them. The problem was the entire top was glued down so tight that I could not get it off. It almost went by the curb for sure then. But I'm hard headed and just started beating the table top with a hammer out of frustration. The warped MDF parts just fell off, leaving a nice all wooden frame that was still securely glued to the legs.

So what's a girl to do but just screw the new boards directly on top of the old top.

See the new top just sitting on top of the old top which I painted to match the legs? You can't tell it's not just part of the table.

I sanded, filled holes, sanded more, filled more holes and kept on until the top was totally smooth and flat. Then I got out my letter punch tools and printed the verses that Damion proposed to me with on each end of the table. It's no longer a table that you could just buy at any store, it's personal.

Then I stained it and put several coats of polyurethane.

Now I have a beautiful (kinda) new table.

It will be a great reminder in the years to come of this year we're entering into right now. Happy Early Anniversary Damion. I hope you enjoy your gift. Just keep your feet off of it!

I like everything about your table. The color green, the stained top, and especially the sweet stamped words.
