People Watching and other things

I love to people watch. I'm not a stalker. The way that people interact with each other intrigues me and the way they dress ... well.. it makes me laugh. hard.

There is an outlet mall by our house that is prime land for some funky clothes. I'm not sure what it is but no one there wears the normal ol' mom jeans. Well, except for me.

Take these girls for example. The girl on the left obviously couldn't afford the whole shirt. It's sad really. We can give everyone health care but we can't give them whole shirts. I might call the UN about this travesty. Did I also mention that she couldn't walk in those boots? They were platform boots and she walked SOOO slow. I started watching to see what was going on and noticed that every time she stepped down with her right foot, her boot would wobble back and forth a few times before she was able to steady herself.

The girl on the right had platform "Chanel" heels on. The real thing is that her eyelashes were longer than her nose. I'm not joking. When she turned around, all I saw was eyelash. Apparently she got a good discount on fake eyelashes and paint on jeans.

I know that they think they look good, maybe in the world's standards they do. But it makes me sad that somewhere along the way they started to believe that looking good means baring your body or that it means adding fake hair, fake eyelashes, fake other things....

Why can't we just be happy with the way we are and dress to cover ourselves?

Along the way back to the car I saw a woman wearing a gorgeous scarf as a shirt (I really loved it), a woman wearing a halter and booty shorts that um... shouldn't have.. ever...., and a 8 year old girl that was dressed like a 20 year old. She was wearing a ton of make up, heels, a short low cut dress and too much jewelry.

Once again it made me sad.

We strive to dress our kids modestly. They refuse to wear pants. We're not pentecostal. I wear pants, they won't.  However we do make sure that most of their dresses or skirts come to their knees or barely above it. We have to protect our kids and teach them how to value themselves for who they are.  Do they occasionally get mad at me when we make them change because an outfit has become too short? Yup. But we're starting to teach them now what we'll expect from them later.  I'm going to let my kids be kids. They have time to be twenty when they're twenty.. and time to tell everyone they're still 25 until they're well past 30 (not that I would know).

Maybe my mom jeans aren't in fashion all the time (or none of the time) and possibly my boring Shirts are boring for others but it's who I am and who I'm proud to be. I don't have to show my body.. I can show my heart. I hope that's one thing my girls learn too. If they don't they'll be locked in the basement.

Great blog, Bobbie. I agree. And as I have one becoming a teen, we are seeing all that pouring in, coming out. She is modest, because she knows nothing else. Keep up the great work. I have always appreciated your standards with your girls. Sometimes my little one is the only one with shorts or leggings under her skirts...but thats okay. We are teaching her...

I've read through some of your posts and have found them to be funny, real and just plain real. I love that and plan to start reading regularly. Thanks for sharing your part of the world with us.
